LAX rental car tips: CONRAC, shuttles, and fees

How car rental works at Los Angeles International Airport: the Rental Car Center, off-airport shuttles, insurance, and fees first-timers miss.

On-airport: the Rental Car Center

LAX moved brand counters and a large share of the ready line into a consolidated rent-a-car center. After you land, collect bags, then follow overhead signs for rental cars. You take the airport’s free connection rather than hunting old brand lots around Westchester.

This is usually calmer than the old curb mix, but it is still a second ride after a long-haul flight. If you are traveling with kids or mobility needs, allow 30–45 minutes from gate to car on a normal day, longer if several international flights land together.

Off-airport companies

Some brands and brokers still operate off-airport. Your confirmation will say whether you meet a shuttle at a designated stop instead of the Rental Car Center. Those rates can look lower. Add shuttle time and confirm the last pickup of the night.

If two quotes are within a few dollars, the on-airport option is usually the calmer arrival, especially after a red-eye.

Fees that change the deal

Airport concession recovery, customer facility charges, and California tax appear on nearly every LAX rental. Young-driver, additional-driver, one-way, and after-hours fees depend on your group and are easy to miss in a mobile quote.

Prepaid basic rates may block changes. A slightly higher flexible rate can be cheaper if your inbound flight is chronically delayed.

Insurance and the counter conversation

Staff will offer collision, liability, and personal-effects products. That is their job. If your credit card includes collision coverage, call the number on the back of the card before you travel and ask specifically about LAX and the car class you booked.

Decline only what you are sure is covered. Liability is separate from collision. If you are not a U.S. resident, do not assume a home policy follows you onto California freeways. LaxRentals does not sell insurance.

Before you drive out

Walk around the car in the garage light and photograph every panel, wheel, and the windshield. Check the fuel rule (full-to-full is the cleanest). Save the return map from your email. LAX return lanes are signed, but first-timers still miss the entrance after a tired I-405 exit.

Add every driver at the desk. An unlisted driver is a coverage problem, not a paperwork detail.
