Late-night and delayed-flight rental pickup at LAX
How to pick up a LAX rental after a red-eye or a delayed inbound: CONRAC hours, off-airport last shuttles, flexible rates, and a dark-garage checklist.

LAX runs late. International arrivals bunch up. A 9:50 p.m. wheels-down can be a 11:20 p.m. bag. Your rental plan has to survive that, not the scheduled time on the boarding pass.
Most major brands at the Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility staff late hours because this airport does not sleep. That is the first reason to prefer an on-airport pickup when you land after 10 p.m. The CONRAC primer is the map. This page is the clock.
Off-airport after midnight
Off-airport companies live or die on the last shuttle. If the confirmation says pickup until 11 p.m. and your flight is “due” at 10:40, you do not have a margin. Either book a brand that states 24-hour pickup or stay at CONRAC.
The same logic applies if you are parking a car you already own and landing late: shuttle lots need published night hours. Overnight parking is the matching read for that case.
Prepaid vs flexible when the inbound slips
A prepaid “no changes” rate looks cheap until a two-hour delay makes you a no-show. Some partners hold the car for a window; some cancel and sell it. If your airline is famous for evening delays into LAX, pay for a flexible rate. You can still compare both on DiscoverCars or Rentalcars.com via the cars page.
Put the partner phone number in your notes app before you fly. Gate-to-garage is a bad time to hunt an email from three weeks ago.
The dark-garage walkaround
Garage lighting at night hides curb rash and windshield stars. Walk the car anyway. Use your phone flashlight on each corner, both bumpers, the roof edge if you can see it, and the windshield from inside. Take photos with the stall number in one frame.
Fuel rule still matters at 1 a.m. Full-to-full is the clean one. If the tank is not full, talk to the booth before you exit. Returning a car “as received” only works if you documented it.
If you miss the counter
Call first. Some brands will keep a key in a lockbox or tell you to take a ride and pick up in the morning without charging a phantom day. Some will not. Do not assume a hotel shuttle plus “I’ll deal with it at 8 a.m.” is free.
If the rental is dead for the night and you already have a car parked at the airport, you are in the parking world, not the rental world.
